Now.

Saturday, August 31st.

Sacramento, California.

“Hey! Don’t move!”

Darla whirled left as she heard the shouting voice, seeing a guard come around the corner, pistol raised. The emergency lights gave a strange crimson hue to everyone and everything around them, like a thin coat of semi-translucent blood.

Her eyes focused on the pistol in the man’s hands, clutched between all of his gloved fingers, the barrel leveling. She backpedaled, bracing herself, but Lincoln lurched between her and the guard, his own arms lifted, his own fingers clamped around a pistol grip, and he fired twice, a clean double-tap, putting the guard down to the floor with no hesitation. Even as the gunshots echoed in the tight confines of the hallway, Darla turned back again toward the adjoining hallway.

“Let me go first!” Lincoln shouted, pushing past her on the left, his weapon pointing down. He moved out ahead of her, knees bent and weapon elevated, moving with experienced precision.

“You’re pretty good at that for a maintenance guy,” Darla remarked.

“I watch a lot of movies?” Lincoln replied quizzically, his weapon passing slowly back and forth to cover the hallway. Walt and Janie came up behind them both, keeping their heads low, moving through the red darkness, staying close to the two of them, moving quickly and quietly.

Darla looked back at Walt. “This little sabotage ploy you made worked pretty darn well!”

He shrugged as they moved. “It was just supposed to pop the jail cell circuit and open our doors. I wasn’t expecting all this,” he gestured to the dark fluorescent lights and ambient emergency lights all around them.

“Well, good job anyway, I guess,” Darla replied.

Boots squeaked up ahead, a swift flash of dark movement against an already dark backdrop. Lincoln shifted left, but swiveled right, firing three times and a muffled grunt barked ahead, the rustling thud of a falling figure audible at the bend of the corridor.

“Over here!” a second voice shouted.

“Uh oh, trouble’s coming,” Lincoln whispered. “Where’s this evidence room?”

“Left, take a left up here,” Darla whispered.

“You know this place?” Walt asked.

Darla pointed toward the wall where a sign that said Evidence had an arrow pointing left. Even in the dark red light it was plainly visible. Janie chuckled. Lincoln ducked slightly, pressing himself forward, staying low to the ground, sticking to the right-hand wall. The hallway ended in a T with the left branch heading toward the evidence room while the right branch apparently led to more guards.

“Stay back,” Lincoln whispered as he pressed forward, brushing his right shoulder against the smooth wall to stay as close to it as possible, clutching his pistol in two hands. Darla held back, the nightstick still in her hand with Walt and Janie just behind her.

“I don’t like this one bit,” Janie whispered.

“Yeah, these red lights are freaking me out,” echoed Walt. More thumping feet sounded from down the right hall and Lincoln pushed forward, moving quickly. Whirling around the corner, Darla saw him lift his weapon and unload, firing shot after shot, at least eight bright, loud flashes, brightly illuminating the dull crimson hallway.
